Saturdays Tying Class, Fall Smallmouth Patterns
Murditch Minnow(08-31-2010)  Join us this Saturday at 2:00pm for our next Intermediate and Skills Development tying class where we will be tying fall smallmouth patterns.  Fall is, in my opinion, the best time of year for smallmouth fishing.  The water is cooling and the crawdads are hibernating so the smallies turn to bustin' minnows to fatten up for the winter.  The small fry born in the spring have grown to about 1 1/2 inches and it is just the size the smallies are after.  Swinging streamers is always a slow casual way to fish but in the fall you can have some tremendous strikes as the smallmouth are very aggressive.  Stop by and tie up some great patterns to get ready for the fall.

FlyMasters At the State Fair

(08-15-2010)  Once again FlyMasters was at the State Fair on the front porch of the DNR pavilion showing people how to tie flies and educating them about all the great fly fishing here in Indiana.  We were tying for two hours and despite hot and humid weather we had a non-stop crowd around us looking at all of the flies and picking up rubber spiders.  All of the kids were the best part of the afternoon.  All kinds of questions and stories about the fish they catch.  One boy picked up a fly and turned to his dad and told him "now you have to get me a fishing pole". Sometimes one fly is all it takes to start a life long passion.

FlyMasters also did a casting demonstration this year on the DNR pond.  A large crowd gathered to watch Jon show them how to cast a fly rod.  Unfortunately the casting demo did not go as smooth as planned. Afterwards Jon told me, "I had a hard time showing them how to cast because every time I laid the fly down a bluegill would come up and take it. I must have caught fifty bluegill while trying to show them how to use a fly rod". We'll be back next year and try not to catch so many pesky bluegill.
