Rod Crossman Painting

Adams
Hook: Mustad 94840, Sizes 20 – 12
Thread: Gray 6/0
Tail: Mixture of grizzly and brown hackle fibers
Wing: Grizzly hackle tips
Body: Muskrat or synthetic dubbing
Hackle: One brown and one grizzly dry fly hackle

Tying Instructions
Step 1: Mount the hook in the vise and attach the thread to hook using a jam knot about 1/8th from the eye.
Step 2: Select two grizzly hackle tips.   Measure to shank length.   Tie in at the jam knot.   Trim the butts.  Raise the tips up and wrap thread in front of them so that the wings will stand upright.
Step 3: Select two hackles – one grizzly and one brown.   Lay the hackles between the wings and tie them off in back of the wings.  Trim excess.
Step 4: Wrap thread back to above the barb.   Select a mixture of brown and grizzly hackle fibers (roll them between your thumb and forefinger to mix).   Even the tips and tie in above the barb.   Trim excess butts.
Step 5: Wax thread and add dubbing about an inch at a time.   Wrap up the shank toward the eye.   Stop just short of the wings.
Step 6: Wrap the brown hackle three turns behind the wings then continue in front of the wings.   Repeat this with the grizzly hackle.   Trim excess.
Step 7: Whip finish and cement the head.
