Rod Building
Instructor
- Derrick
Have you ever dreamed of one day building yourself the perfect fly rod.  It would have just the right action for the fish you catch.  The grip would be shaped to fit your hand and casting style.  FlyMasters rod building classes can help that dream come true.  We can show you how to do everything from gluing the reel seat and rod together, shaping the cork handle to  setting the guides on the blank rod.  When you are finished you will have a custom rod built for you  and by you.  A treasure to last a life time.

Maybe you were handed down and old rod from you father, brother, grandfather, uncle or friend. Maybe the rod came with some wonderful stories of the fish that had been caught with it and you would like to restore it to it original glory to catch some more.  FlyMasters can help with this also.  We can help guide you through the process of stripping the old finish, marking the guide locations and removing the old reel seat.  With our help you will be out on the water in no time making memories of your own with an heirloom that maybe one day you will pass down (of course with your stories added to the others).

Derrick, the instructor, has this to say about building your own rod and why you get a better rod when you build your own.

The first rod I ever built was a cane blank that I bought at a hardware store. It was nine feet long which was massive compared to my six year old frame. Our neighbor was a Herter's salesman (Herter's use to be the name in fly fishing equipment) and took an interest in teaching me how to build rods and fish. It is getting to know the people that I teach which is most enjoyable for me when I do a class. It is fun to build the rods too!

You build your own rod because it will cast better than the one you buy already built. The rod will be built for your casting style, not everyone in general. After positioning and taping on the guides, you can go out and cast the rod and then make changes as needed to fine tune it for you. You can also pick the hardware to suit your taste and use any color of thread to make it a unique piece of work.

Here is more information from Derrick concerning what FlyMasters can offer to the beginning rod builder.
We carry a good selection of blanks and all the accessories for rod building. We have numerous books and videos on the subject. All of the rods that we carry in the store can be bought as a blank. If you want to know what the rod will cast like you can come in and cast one from the factory. If you have an interest in restoring or repairing a rod just give me a call and I will help you get started. I will also do the restoration and repair if that is not your interest.
I schedule classes as needed anytime of the year. Contact me at FlyMasters 317-570-9811 or send an with any questions, repairs, or scheduling a class.

You can also send an e-mail if you have a question.
