Synopsis of Class
|
Summer is a time of warm days, muggy evenings and lots and
lots of insects. Tons of insects from the water and
more from the land all around the water. Know in fly
fishing circle simply as "terrestrials" which is to say any
non-aquatic insect that happens to land in the water and get
eaten by fish on a regular basis. Terrestrials include
grass hoppers, spiders, crickets, cicadas, beetles, ants,
bees, wasps, and many types of common flies (house flies,
horse flies, black flies, gnats, etc...). Some for these
insects are a quick bite and others are a real mouth full
for any fish. Fortunately for you and I trout (and
most other fish) love to gobble up these unfortunate bugs
that land in the water.
Usually all of these insects
float on the surface of the water. Caught in the
surface film, they struggle to get free before being eaten.
This means that closed cell foam is a great material in any
terrestrial fly design. As well, these insects are
usually large; larger than say a midge. So big bushy
foam bugs are great producers.
In this class we will be tying four different patterns. The following are the
flies you will tie. All will be tied on size 10 hooks
(large for trout flies). If you are looking for some
great terrestrials for your fly box, come by this Saturday
and tie these up. They are easy to tie, you don't have
to worry about neatness and they work great!
