Amabilis Bamboo rods

Rod Crossman was born in South Dakota raised in upstate New York and now lives in Indiana. He makes his living creating paintings and being Artist in Residence at Indiana Wesleyan University. Although those two vocations are responsible for his working life the past two decades—in the past he also life-guarded, sacked groceries, did factory work, graphic art and taught High School Art.

He and his wife Mary have raised two boys, an English Pointer, English Setter, and three Labs. His boys Barry and Bryan are finally old enough to forgive and forget their dad's obsession with trout which denied them any chance at a normal childhood. Rod taught them how to read water, tie flies and cast a fly rod. - All things that have been a serious distraction for them in personal relationships and earning a living. Rods paintings can be seen regularly in many of the best sporting magazines, journals, and galleries. His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide including places like the Smithsonian, Chicago Art Institute, Woodson Art Museum, Ward Museum, High Museum, and many others. He has designed trout and duck stamps for many states.

He likes to paint most about the moments between action. His favorite words are “Awe” and “Wonder.” - - The emotions that lead us into that incredible sense of mystery when we consider the creation.

In February 2003, FlyMasters took Rod Crossman to the Ascension Bay Bonefish Club on the Yucatan Peninsula. For six days Rod caught fish and made sketches of the landscape and fish. He has produced this oil painting for FlyMasters and has made prints of it available for sale.

The bonefish in Ascension Bay are numerous and fun to catch but everyone who has been to ABBC will tell you that the permit is the fish in their dreams. It is the eyes of the permit that is seen last before it races away with or without the fly. These eyes look into the fisherman’s soul and light a fire that lingers until the next encounter.

Rod has created this encounter in this painting. FlyMasters is offering a limited number of 11” X 18” prints for $150 with pencil or watercolor remarques available for an additional $50 or $75 respectively. Contact FlyMasters via or 317-570-9811 to purchase your print. If you have not been to ABBC come and join us for the best fishing trip we take every year!
