Pass Along What You Have
Learned

Fly Tier and Webmaster
Most of us remember well the first time we caught a fish on
a fly rod. So much so that we delight in telling
others of this account and somehow the story gets longer
with each telling. It might have been with a father,
grandfather, uncle, mother, brother, sister, friend, or all
by yourself. Whatever the case, you picked up a fly
rod, were entranced with the tiny fly on the end of the
wispy little line and managed to get it on or in the water
and entice a fish to take it. Since that day you have spent
hours reading, researching, talking and learning more and
more about fly fishing to continue the excitement.
For
me fly fishing over the years has become much more than just
something to do on a warm summers evening outdoors. It
has become a haven for me. Jimmy Buffett would call is a
particular harbor. A place where I can get away from
the chaos, busy, pressures of day to day life.
Somewhere to slow down and force back into focus the things
that are important and the world I live in. Somewhere in
this process of slowing down, usually when the fish are not
biting and my mind wanders, I think about how much more life
there is outside of the confines of my home than inside.
That the world around us is as much a part of the fly
fishing experience as the actual fish. Fox, Deer,
Eagles, Hawks, Owls, Mink, Beaver, Raccoons, Coyotes, Ducks,
Geese, Birds, Squirrels and Chipmunks are all around where I
fish (10 minutes from my home in Carmel by the way).
All add to each and every trip I make to the river.
I
realizing just how wonderful the resources are around me for
fly fishing I also realize how important it is to preserve
it. The best way to preserve it is to pass on wheat I
have learned. Not only passing on the art and
philosophy of fly fishing but passing on a respect for every
aspect of fly fishing we enjoy. It is a wonderful site
to see a young child or young adult (even older adults too)
catch their first fish one a fly rods. Their
enthusiasm and excitement helps me relive my younger years
when it was all fresh and new as well. It is equally
rewarding when they take note of the world around them while
they are fishing and realize that it is also part of the
experience. They they are learning about all of fly
fishing and not jus how to catch fish.
Vow
this summer to take somebody new fly fishing. Maybe
the seed will grow and maybe not. If it does you have
given them more then just a past time and you have helped
make certain fly fishing stays around for all of us.
Be Well,
Ian

New Classes for Intermediate Fly Tying
While on the subject of fly tying, we have added new
tying classes for our Saturday afternoon
Intermediate and
Skills Development Tying class. Whatever your interest
in fly tying we have a class this fall and winter for you.
We even threw in a couple of "just for fun" classes.
We even started something new this fall. We will be
focusing on Steelhead this fall with a series of classes to
broaden your library of steelhead flies. Four classes
dealing with eggs, nymphs, streamer and tube flies.
All in time for the fall steelhead season. Plan on
spending a few Saturday afternoons at
FlyMasters this fall.
It is time well spent.
Good Changes for the Youth of Indiana
Previously, if you were under the age of sixteen you did not
need a fishing license to fish the waters of Indiana. That
has changed as of 2009. Now if you are under the age of 18
you do not need a fishing license. This means that young
boys and girls can fish away their summer hours without
having to be concerned about purchasing a license for a
couple more years. Anything that helps young people fish
more is a good thing.
Barothy Lodge for Fall Salmon
Looking for a nice fall trip? Somewhere not to far away and only be gone for a few days? Look no further than our Annual
Fall Salmon trip to Barothy Lodge in Walhalla Michigan.
We have a great cabin all lined up for the last week of
September and the Pere Marquette will provide the Salmon.
If you did not get a chance to take a nice trip this summer
now is the time. This trip is not very expensive and
well worth it. Treat yourself this fall to a great
fishing experience.
