Tucked here in the middle west, amidst all
the corn and soybean, many people are not aware of the great
fishing that is only a few hours away.
Since much of what we fish for around here is
considered "warmwater" species, fishing for trout is about as
coldwater as it gets. But just a few miles North there is a
place that has "All Wild" steelhead
returning every spring to spawn. Every year thousands
of fish migrate out of Lake Michigan into the streams of
west coast of Michigan to answer natures call.

Specifically, the river I talk about is the Pere Marquette
river in west central Michigan (only 5 hours away).
Yes, I did mention "All Wild" steelhead. "But
steelhead have been stocked in Lake Michigan for years, how
can they be wild"? They are wild because they have NEVER
been stocked in the Pere Marquette. When steelhead are
stocked they are released in streams not just dumped in the
big waters of Lake Michigan. This gives them the best
chance of imprinting the river they were stocked in and thus
returning every year.
As good as mother natures navigation systems are occasionally
some fish get off course. These steelhead (and Salmon
as well) found their way into the Pere Marquette and
spawned. Over time the fish that returned to spawn
each year became more and more wild fish that began their
lives in the Pere Marquette river. So any steelhead
you catch in the Pere Marquette is really a wild fish.

Besides having all wild steelhead, the Pere Marquette is the
only totally free flowing stream in the state of Michigan.
From its headwaters to where it dumps into Lake Michigan at
Ludington there are no dams on the Pere Marquette.
Natural springs and coldwater run off help keep the water
cold year round.
This spring FlyMasters will be hosting a trip to the fabled
Pere Marquette to fish for steelhead. The spring run
is usually more productive than the fall and lasts longer.
We will be staying at the
Gray Hawk
cabin at Barothy
Lodge for two days of guided fishing and three nights. |

|
 |
The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and
microwave, large living room with gas fireplace, pool table
and private swimming pool (can you say Polar Bear Club?).
There is lots of room for 8 to 10 people to spread out and
relax. We are also
right on the Pere Marquette river. The view doesn't
get much better.
We will arrive at the cabin on the 25th of April (Sunday)
and fish the 26th and 27th. Everyone leaves on the
28th of April (Wednesday). The price for this outing
is $600.00. This covers the lodging, guide service and
evening meals. The guides will provide lunch and warm
muffins in the morning (on request). The price also
does not include your transportation to the cabin and any
gratuities you pass along to the guides for a great day of
fishing.
Guide
services are provide by
Indigo Guide
Service of Walhalla Michigan.
Kevin Morlock has
called the Pere Marquette his home waters for the past 20
years. Kevin has been featured in numerous articles in
In-Fisherman, Eastern Fly Fishing and Midwest Fly Fishing.
He has also appeared in numerous fly fishing shows for
In-Fisherman.
Steve Martinez was born and raised with the Pere
Marquette practically in his backyard.
Walt Grau
has been guiding on the Pere Marquette since the early '70s
(like back in the stone ages, fiberglass rods!).
