Rainbow TroutWhen most Hoosiers think of going trout fishing they immediately think of Michigan, then Kentucky or Ohio and finally heading even further away to Montana, Colorado, Missouri, etc...  Most people think they will have a greater chance of being caught in a hurricane in Indiana than they do of catching trout.  Well, we are please to inform all local fisherman and fisherwomen that this is no longer the case.  You can now catch rainbow and brown trout within an hour and a half of Indianapolis!

A number of years ago, the Central Indiana Trout Unlimited (CITU) chapter had the foresight to push for some trout stockings in the tailwaters of Brookville Reservoir.  Through sound planning, regular monitoring and lots of hard work their vision is a success.  For most of the past seven years the CITU has been carrying most of the burden of the stockings, monitoring and well being of the little trout fishery they had developed.  Slowly in the past few years the state has been coming around that the tailwater at Brookville is a viable trout fishery and just this year the US Fish and Wildlife has taken over the administration of this little gem.

Brown TroutOne of the biggest battles that CITU has been dealing with concerning the fishery is stabilizing the temperature to improve the habitat for the trout stocked there.  Often in summers past the temperature of the water touch into the 70s which is bad news for trout.   The past summer the Army Corp of Engineers has made great strides in keeping more regular flows and the temperatures down.  So much so that we have been hearing all summer about people catching 18 to 20 inch browns and rainbows.

Brookville InnIn addition to the improvements to the trout fishery, the town of Brookville itself is undergoing many changes.  Improvements to the city park, which provides easy access to the stream, the roads around and through the town as well as accommodations have greatly helped.  Brookville is about an hour and 15 minutes from Indianapolis.  Not too far, but sometimes, depending on the fishing conditions, it is easier to come down the night before or stay to fish into the dark hours (which can provide for exciting encounters).  In these situations it is nice to know there are a number of B&B (bed and breakfast) establishments close by and many great places to grab some dinner or breakfast.

Local Fisherwoman on the Brookville TailwaterAnother Great Catch at BrookvilleThe importance of this great trout fishery to Indiana has not been missed by FlyMasters.  in the past two years we have hosted a number of trout fishing classes and clinics in the Brookville tailwater.  We have classes planned throughout the year (yes even in the winter months).  In the shop we have stocked up on particular flies and gear that will help fisherman and fisherwomen have many productive experiences when visiting this little slice of heaven.  We have also started doing guided trips to the Brookville tailwater if you are interested.  All of us in the shop have fished this water many times and are very knowledgeable about the various places to fish and what approaches are most productive.

Fox Chasing a FishIn an attempt to help people learn more about the trout fishery at Brookville we have been collecting information concerning this fishery.  We are attempting to collect as much information as possible and this page is where you can find links to all we have. Here you can find links to stream flows, fishing regulations, stocking and shocking reports, local accommodations, articles and anything else we can find that might help people learn more about this fishery.  The more people know the more they can help keep this a wonderful fishery for generations to come.  Also, let us not forget, pictures of some of the great fish caught at Brookville.  The best testimony as to how great the fishing is!
