Fly Tying Expo Highlights

If you did not get a chance to attend the Fly Tying Expo in Holt Michigan this past weekend you have to make plans for next year. This is a really nice show to attend.

It is mostly a fly tying show and, this year, there were more than 80 tiers showing everyone who would watch what they love doing best. There were classic flies, dry flies, steelhead flies, trout flies, carp flies and nice big meaty warmwater flies being tied up everywhere. There were also a number of great seminars from various guides, tiers and authors from around the Midwest.

Rex Phillips and Cecil Guidry (of Warmwater Chronicles) headed up to Holt with me Friday afternoon. We met up with Steve Martinez and Kevin Morlock of Indigo Guide Service and Austin Adduci of Grab Your Fly Charters out of Chicago. We spent the evening over dinner and drinks talking it up about everything under the sun, especially fishing.

The Fly Tying Expo is put on by the Great Lakes Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers and is an annual event. Log this one back in the gray matter and next year make certain to spend a day in Holt Michigan.

For now, here are some highlights from the day.

Guidry’s Hellboy

Now that the weather is stable and the smallies are hitting topwater it is time to bring out The Hellboy. This is a fly created by our friend Cecil Guidry and is a great fly for beating the banks, stumps, wood, weeds and grass for smallmouth bass. Plus, it is not a complicated fly to tie. Tie some up in your favorite topwater colors and take them out this weekend.

Fly Tying at BSTS

I recently published some excellent fly tying photos from our time at the 58th annual Boat, sport and Travel Show (BSTS). Since our main page is a news section and these photos will eventually get pushed down and off of the page I published them here on Dressed Irons as a gallery. Now you can come back to them as often and for as long as you like.

We had a great time at the show and the number of people who came by our booth to tie flies was more than we ever had before. Judging from the number of people that hung around watching the fly tying tie and asked questions there are more people in the Indianapolis area that tie flies or want to tie flies than I ever imagined.

We would like to thank the following people for tying flies during the show and adding so much to the show.

Cecil Guidry
Rex Phillips
Reggie Alexander
John "Junior" Burke
John Clanton
Gary Krebs
Dustin Harley
Kevin Morlock

Derrick and I also did a fair bit of tying but there will be other posts about that.

- Enjoy

Cecil’s Realistic Tying Class

Saturday turned out to be rainy and snowy here in Indianapolis.  No big deal for us since we were inside enjoying Cecil Guidry's Realistic Fly tying class. Cecil, once again, did a great job teaching us his simple techniques for creating such realistic flies.  So realistic that when I dropped then in my wife's hand that evening, to show her what a good fly tier I am, she made some sort of sound of disgust and uttered, "these are ugly, yuck, hideous looking bugs".  I took it as a compliment.  Everyone had a great time and agreed it was the best way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon.
