Davie’s Mouse Caddis

When the heat of summer is upon us I enjoy heading out to the stream and throwing a nice dry fly caddis imitation along the grass beds for smallies. Hands down the Elk Hair Caddis, tied in large sizes with deer hair, is a favorite for this. However, I ran across Davie McPhail's Mouse Caddis and can not wait to get this one on the water. What a fun looking tie and throwing this around in a size 6 or 8 (or even a 4) I think will be a great fly. I'll let you know later this year!

Another Use for Wine

So, the doctors these days say that a glass of wine a day is good for the health. The right doctor might even tell you two glasses are even better. And, being the good patient you are you have your glass of wine everyday. Each bottle you open you take a look at the "cork" and wonder how you can use it in your fly tying to catch some nice Largemouth Bass or Northern Pike.

Our good friend Jr. Burke decided to take a cork or two to the bench and find out just what he could do. Here is what he came up with. This is a BIG fly for BIG fish. Nothing less than a 10 weight is going to cast this behemoth. He said he knows the perfect pike lake to try this out on this summer. Keep an eye on Dressed Irons for more Wine Cork flies throughout the summer.

Thanks Again Cecil For Another Great Class

In case you were unaware, our good friend Cecil Guidry was just in the shop teaching another of our Intermediate and Skills Development tying classes.  This class was on Summer Bluegill Flies and fortunately for everyone in the class they got to learn some of Cecil's tried and true bluegill patterns.  Cecil has been casting to bluegill on the warm waters off Indiana for many many years and loves to come up with new and innovative patterns for bringing in the panfish. Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to the next time Cecil is in the shop teaching.  Here are a few photos from the class.
