The term "March Madness" normally refers to the sport of basketball; something big in Indiana. But for the year 2012, March Madness refers to the unbelievable fishing we have been having this month. With the unusual warm weather the flowers are not the only thing that have come out early. Most of the ponds and lakes are hopping with bass and panfish, some already on the nest. The rivers are also picking up with smallies being taken on topwater just prior to the rains we had last week.
We have a bit of a cold snap on us now but expect the trend to continue for the next few weeks that everything will be early. White bass will run early, blue wing olives are already coming off the water, and the smallies will be on the nest early. According to the Climate Prediction Center we should have above temps for the next three months and about average rainfall. Keep in mind "average" for May and June in the past four years has been floods.
Get your gear out early, tie up some flies and get out on the water. Make certain to send a report to us at INFO [at] FLYMASTERS [dot] COM. We have a running fishing report section on our main page and your input will help keep it up to date.
